THE EXPERIENCE
Join Portland’s Yelling Choir for an evening of voice, presence, and power. Following an introduction by founder and director Maxx Katz, Yelling Choir will present What Will Contain Us?, a breathtaking performance work that revels in the joy and vulnerability of owning our voices in an embodied, supportive community. Yelling Choir breaks down walls with their unique approach to avant-garde performance. After a brief intermission, members of Yelling Choir will invite the audience to participate in a collective vocal experience (yelling encouraged, but by no means required!). Come summon the forces of the universe.
ON STAGE: Yelling Choir
Yelling Choir is a performance process created by Maxx Katz that reimagines voice, presence, and power. They share the immediate, visceral experience of having a voice, both sonically and creatively. They love to yell—and they also explore other sounds, extended vocal techniques, movement, and improvisation. They explore getting big, taking up space, allowing a full spectrum of emotions—from joy to rage to boredom to delight, and everything in between—in an emotionally regulated and supported way.
Yelling Choir project has debuted compositions at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s Time-Based Art Festival, Oregon Contemporary 2024 Artists’ Biennial, the American Choral Directors Association NW Conference, Congress Yard Projects, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and ACRE Artist Residency. Katz has led Yelling Choir workshops at Banff and ACRE, as well as Portland State University, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Inward Bound Mindfulness Education teen and young adult meditation retreats, and Portland Public Schools.
