World of Henna: Morocco is the second chapter in the documentary series showcasing the culture and traditions of henna art around the world. From the labyrinth of old Fez to the deep desert oases, we enter the homes of regional henna artists, where they share their aspirations, expertise, and their determination to flourish in a world that is not designed for their success. While experiencing the rich artistic and spiritual practices of Moroccan henna, we are offered a doorway into this enigmatic culture. Beyond the stereotypes of camel rides and mint tea, viewers can appreciate the depth of the Moroccan people and their country.

ON STAGE: Seffarine, Melanie Ooi, and Erika Ryn
Seffarine – The sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean, are the musical DNA of a beautifully complex extended family linking North Africa and Europe. The musicians of Seffarine, soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp, supported by master musicians of diverse cultures, embrace and extend this rich legacy. Their exciting performances masterfully combine explosive flamenco footwork, exotic instrumentation, and grooving basslines. These diverse backgrounds meld, creating what SoundRoots describes as “an ear-caressing blend of sounds from Spain and North Africa, spiced with a bit of fiery instrumentation and percussion.”

Melanie Ooi – New Zealand born Melanie Ooi has been practicing the art of henna since 2006, primarily building her business in her chosen home of Portland, Oregon, USA. Always concerned with innovation and signature style as an artist, Melanie was inspired to make the first documentary series about henna, World of Henna, firstly as a passion project for herself and secondly as a gift to the international henna community. She wanted to help educate henna artists, fans and the general public about the history and culture of henna. Melanie’s work has been featured on OPB Art Beat, Vogue India, Buzzfeed, Martha Stewart Weddings. She has served as an instructor at the Henna Intensive & Retreat, Henna Chai, and Henna Con.
Erika Ryn -Raised by artistic parents in art galleries and backstages of community theatres, Erika Ryn has been immersed in the creative process since birth. She completed her BA in Digital Art in 2008 at ASU, creating abstract conceptual films under the guidance of Muriel Magenta and planting the seed for future filmmaking aspirations. She has deepened her love for and understanding of henna body art practices since beginning a mentorship with Melanie in 2012, and then venturing into the world of permanent body art as a professional tattoo artist in 2020. With a deep passion and respect for the diverse traditions of body art around the world she was thrilled at the opportunity to join Melanie on this journey into the World of Henna, creating a film series which truly aims to capture the richness, color, passion, history, and beauty of henna.
