THE EXPERIENCE

Prepare for an evening of prestidigitation (magic tricks!) and history, as presented by Portland magician Robin Washburn, who will be performing magic as well as providing a closer look into the history of the conjurors and magic tricks that inspired Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige.

ON SCREEN: The Prestige

2006. Directed by Christopher Nolan. Runtime: 130 minutes. Rated PG-13. Starring: Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, w/ David Bowie as Nikolai Tesla (Bowie’s final cinematic performance!)

A period thriller set in Edwardian London, two rival magicians, Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman), a charismatic showman, and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale), a gifted illusionist, are friends and partners until one fateful night when their biggest trick goes terribly wrong. Now the bitterest of enemies, they will stop at nothing to learn each other’s secrets. As their rivalry escalates into a total obsession full of deceit and sabotage, they risk everything to become the greatest magician of all time. But nothing is as it seems. So watch closely…

ON STAGE: Robin Washburn

Robin Washburn is a Portland magician, music video director, and songwriter. Robin wrote and performed The History of Magic, a three-hour, one-man parlor magic show that ran throughout the fall of 2023 at the Skeleton Key Odditorium and sold out each night. He has performed magic at Raven’s Manor, The Sou-wester Lodge, The Good Medicine Theater, and hosted a 12-month long experimental, punk rock Zoom magic show called A Magic Show For The End of The World during the pandemic. When he’s not performing magic he can sometimes be found directing music videos (past clients include The Helio Sequence and The Prids), and writing and recording music with his band, Séance School.
