THE EXPERIENCE

Get swept up in joyful chaos and big-band rebellion with Swing Girls, a raucous slice of Japanese teen comedy from director Shinobu Yaguchi. Set in rural Yamagata, a group of bored high-school girls accidentally poison their school brass band, and decide, on a whim, to form a swing jazz group instead.

ON SCREEN: Swing Girls

2004. Directed by Shinobu Yaguchi. Runtime: 1 hour 45 minutes.

A comedy that follows a group of apathetic high school girls whose attempt to skip summer math class goes disastrously wrong when they accidentally poison the school’s brass band. Tasked with replacing them, the girls, none of whom can play an instrument, reluctantly form a jazz band. What begins as a punishment soon transforms into a journey of friendship, determination, and the unexpected joy of music as they learn to play, hustle to buy their own instruments, and discover their own rhythm along the way.
