THE EXPERIENCE

Trailblazing artist-activists Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens join us in person for a special pre-film artist talk before the Portland premiere of their latest documentary, Playing with Fire: An Ecosexual Emergency. Known for fusing art, activism, and unabashed intimacy, Stephens and Sprinkle bring their signature mix of humor, vulnerability, and radical ecological love to the Tomorrow Theater stage. This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the creators about their groundbreaking practice and the personal story that inspired their latest film.

ON SCREEN: Playing with Fire: An Ecosexual Emergency

2025. Directed by Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens. Runtime: 1 hour 11 minutes.

From the creators of the first queer environmental documentary feature films comes a hot new offering. The third chapter is their most epic and daring yet—fusing art, activism, and intimate storytelling in a touching journey through crisis, change, and renewal. When a firestorm rips through their redwood forest home, two artist-activists—Beth Stephens & Annie Sprinkle—emerge with a powerful message of love, resilience, and ecological hope, guided by a relationship with their magical peacock.

ON STAGE: Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens

Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D., is a performance artist, former sex worker, and self-proclaimed “eco-sexual,” whose work has reshaped cultural conversations around sexuality and the environment. Beth Stephens is an interdisciplinary artist and professor whose decades of work explore the intersections of love, ecology, and social justice. Together, Stephens and Sprinkle have pioneered the “ecosexual” movement, transforming the way audiences experience both art and the natural world.
