THE EXPERIENCE
My Father’s Shadow, the acclaimed debut feature from director Akinola Davies Jr., made history in 2025 as the first Nigerian‑backed film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival’s official selection. Cascade Festival of African Films is proud to co-present this special spring screening, continuing their mission to amplify African and African-diaspora stories year-round.
Set on June 12, 1993, the day of a fraught national election, the film follows a father and his two sons as they traverse the sprawling city of Lagos under the shadow of political unrest. Over the course of a single, pivotal day, the boys get a rare glimpse into their father’s struggles, hopes, and the harsh realities of providing for his family.
Shot on 16mm film, My Father’s Shadow is at once a love letter to Lagos, its vibrant energy & beautiful chaos, and a deeply human story about family, memory, and the painful distance forged by absence and longing.
We’re thrilled to partner with MUBI on this screening! All attendees get a free tote and access to 60 days of MUBI at mubi.com/pamcut.
