THE EXPERIENCE
Join us for a screening of Josie and the Pussycats, curated by Charli xcx as one of the films that inspired her for her upcoming film The Moment (at the Tomorrow on Saturday, March 7).
Art + capitalism = product placement, I guess? In a time where it’s encouraged to unashamedly go and get the bag, this film is reminiscent of purer days when selling out was deemed lame and dishonest! I’ve always loved it, but I’ve also always loved a brand deal, so I probably would have been down for all the brainwashing. – Charli xcx
Josie and the Pussycats is also part of our MARCH MADNESS: MUSIC MOVIES series: a wild, no-holds-barred showdown to crown the ultimate music movie. Vote on Instagram, watch the films at the theater, and follow the bracket as we tally up the points. Each category pits legendary performances, iconic documentaries, and music-filled classics against each other in a battle for screen supremacy.
In the ROCK N ROLL: TEENS EDITION bracket, Josie and the Pussycats faces off against Rock N Roll High School for the title of best teen music movie.
ON SCREEN: Josie and the Pussycats
2001. Directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont. Runtime: 1 hour 38 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Josie, Melody, and Val are three small-town girl musicians determined to take their rock band out of their garage and straight to the top, while remaining true to their look, style, and sound. They get a record deal which brings fame and fortune, but soon realize they are pawns of two people who want to control the youth of America. They must clear their names, even if it means losing fame and fortune.
