THE EXPERIENCE
Join us for a night of Iranian dancing and culture! Iran is culturally diverse and rich and Sahar will be sharing dance moves from just a handful of traditions, along with curated Iranian music videos from various time periods to enjoy and dance to. Bijan Berahimi from Fisk will be providing a short intro and bring books and print materials.
ON STAGE: Sahar Y
I was born in Tehran, Iran and primarily raised in Vienna, Austria. My practice and offerings are informed by my diasporic upbringing and rooted in values of collective care, solidarity, abolition, and true justice. I teach yoga, Pilates, strength training, and aerial yoga full-time, and love sharing movement practices with others. I do not believe movement or the right yoga class or Pilates session will solve all your problems or make the world a more just place, but I do believe that showing up for ourselves and our bodies, taking the time to take deep, intentional breaths and moving our bodies will create discipline and ease within ourselves, allowing us to show up as our whole selves to better take on the injustices of the world. From a young age, I loved dancing to Iranian (and other SWANA) music and am excited to share music and dance from my home and birth country.
ON SCREEN: Appropriate Behavior
2014. Directed by Desiree Akhavan. Runtime: 1hr 30min. Not Rated.
For Shirin (Desiree Akhavan), being part of a perfect Persian family isn’t easy. Acceptance eludes her from all sides: her family doesn’t know she’s bisexual, and her ex-girlfriend, Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), can’t understand why she doesn’t tell them. Even the six-year-old boys in her moviemaking class are too ADD to focus on her for more than a second. Following a family announcement of her brother’s betrothal to a parentally approved Iranian prize catch, Shirin embarks on a private rebellion involving a series of pansexual escapades, while trying to decipher what went wrong with Maxine.
