THE EXPERIENCE

Prior to the film, take part in a fun game of trivia about the holidays, film history, and Portland fun facts with local trivia master John Doyle. Festive prizes will be awarded to the winner and to the wearer of the ugliest holiday sweater. Following trivia, John will then introduce director Sean Brown to say a few words about his film.

ON SCREEN: Christmas Freak

2021. Directed by Sean Brown. Runtime: 91 minutes.

Rudy is a freak. A Christmas Freak. But for a guy who celebrates Christmas every day of the year he seems to have lost his Christmas spirit. When he meets the lovely Clarice, Rudy’s life seems to finally turn around. He even stands up to his domineering mother! But when Clarice insists that Christmas is only on December 25, this 50-year-old virgin has to come to grips with his obsession for re-living Christmas every day.

ON STAGE:

Director Sean Brown has led an unsorted life. After attending college in London, Mexico City, and San Diego, CA, Sean finally graduated and then did post-production work in Los Angeles for several years. He moved to New York to pursue writing for the theater and saw his play La Roca produced off-Broadway at The Theater for the New City. Another play, Wam’s & Wa’s, also received a staging in the East Village. With his husband, John, he traveled to Asia and worked for two years. In Seoul, Sean tutored the family of former President of South Korea, Park Chung Hee. In his spare time, Sean wrote a regular column in The Korea Herald, did gaming industry voice work, characterizations for animated series, and hosted a children’s television show called Hi Charlie! Settling in Portland with John, they opened the long-time local favorite restaurant NO FISH! GO FISH! on Hawthorne Blvd. After selling the business in 2012, Sean began his career as a filmmaker and has since completed five award-winning feature films. Currently, Sean is working on a one-man theatrical piece titled Death of a Drag Queen and several short video projects with other filmmakers. He and John are proud dads to a daughter and proud granddads to a granddaughter. They also have a Chihuahua named Taco who would like you to know that he performed as Prancer in Christmas Freak and worked for treats.

John Doyle has been hosting trivia nights around Portland for over twenty years and is a past winner of the coveted Willamette Week: Best of Portland, Best Trivia Night Award. Currently he is the Thursday night emcee for ShanRock’s Triviology at East Burn. John is also the author of the forthcoming book Portland’s Historic Houses of Worship and regularly leads walking tours throughout the city.
