THE EXPERIENCE

Join MusicPortland and City Commissioner Jamie Dunphy for a special screening of The Day the Music Stopped at the Tomorrow Theater. This award-winning documentary chronicles Nashville’s loss of its independent music venues to corporate development—an all-too-familiar pattern that Portland risks repeating without deliberate action. A post-film discussion with Commissioner Dunphy, the filmmaker, the film’s subject, and local city leaders will explore how Portland can protect its music ecosystem before it’s too late.

ON SCEEN: The Day the Music Stopped

Examines the decade-long struggle of independent music venues and the creative class they support against developers and concert promoter Live Nation. Taking place in Nashville, Tennessee—“Music City USA”—the story is depicted through the lens of Exit/In, one of the nation’s most historic independent venues. The club’s owner/operator Chris Cobb, the musicians who perform there, and political allies work together to save the club from imminent corporate takeover.
