THE EXPERIENCE

Join CreativeMornings/Portland for an inspiring talk from Spencer Garland, a local artist, educator and animator who aims to expand the bounds of Black expression. Spencer was recently featured at the Portland Art Museum and BlackStar Film Festival, has upcoming collaborations with the Smithsonian and MoMA, and founded BRENDA ARTS—an interdisciplinary design studio where BIPOC youth are integrated into all of the productions. We’ll get to hear about Spencer’s latest projects, how he collaborates with students, and why he feels it’s important to keep the process of making as visible as the result.

ON STAGE: Spencer Garland

Spencer Garland is an interdisciplinary artist and educator operating in Portland, OR. His work encompasses animation, video games, and films. Garland has been featured at the Portland Art Museum, BlackStar Film Festival, with upcoming collaborations with the Smithsonian and MoMA. He aims to tell Black stories that have never been told through animation while showing the process of making the project in real-time with his students. Their feedback and questions drive his own personal curiosity.
