THE EXPERIENCE

Reading party before a movie about the power of reading! We can’t promise that you’ll be able to levitate objects after this session, but reading will certainly unlock new horizons. Doors and socializing from 3 – 3:30 p.m.; followed by 30 minutes of silent reading until 4 p.m. After the reading session, we’ll chat about what we read before the film. Matilda (102 min) will start at 4:30 p.m.

ON SCREEN: Matilda

1996. Directed by Danny DeVito. Runtime: 102 minutes. Rated PG.

This film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s novel tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father (Danny DeVito) and mother (Rhea Perlman). Worse, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the evil principal at Matilda’s school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull’s wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.

HOSTED BY: Books With Pictures

Books with Pictures is a comic book store in Portland, OR. We were built from the ground up to prioritize inclusivity and diverse representation. We want to be the shop where we can say YES! to anyone who walks in and asks “Do you have any stories with someone who’s like me?” Our staff listens closely to each customer’s interests and curiosities to help open new doors.

Our mission is explicitly inclusive; we strive to be a space that is welcoming to people who love good stories without regard to age, race, sexual orientation, gender expression, or disability status. We believe that representation of diverse perspectives is crucial to our mission, and stock content reflecting that belief.
