THE EXPERIENCE

Sharp, fearless, and darkly funny, Coexistence, My Ass! follows comedian and activist Noam Shuster Eliassi as she navigates the space between hope and heartbreak. Once held up as a symbol of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Eliassi now turns to stand-up comedy and political satire to confront the devastating realities unfolding around her.

As violence escalates and the language of “coexistence” grows increasingly strained, the film captures an artist wrestling in real time with what it means to speak, to joke, and to challenge audiences when the stakes feel impossibly high. Blending humor with urgency, this documentary invites viewers into a complex, deeply human reckoning with identity, diplomacy, and dissent.

Presented in partnership with From the Ground UP, a Portland-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering new art and amplifying marginalized voices. By centering femme-identified and non-binary artists, From the Ground UP creates space for bold storytelling, meaningful dialogue, and work that challenges and reimagines the cultural landscape.

ON SCREEN: Coexistence, My Ass!

2026. Directed by Amber Fares. Runtime: 1 hour 35 minutes.

COEXISTENCE, MY ASS! follows Israeli activist-comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi as she creates a comedy show by the same name. Shot over five tumultuous years, the film traces Noam’s personal, professional, and political journey in tandem with the region’s steady deterioration.

Raised in a bilingual Israeli-Palestinian village — the only intentionally integrated community in the country — Noam grows disillusioned with traditional peace activism. She pivots to stand-up and quickly attracts attention across the Middle East. But as her star rises, everything around her falls apart. With biting satire, Noam pushes her audiences to face difficult truths that aren’t always funny but do remind us that another reality is possible.

PRESENTED BY:

From the Ground UP : A Research and Development Center for New Art is a Portland OR, based non-profit that fosters the creation of new art. They seek to expand, reimagine and invent new ways of making, producing and presenting art.

They center femme identified artists (including non-binary communities) with the aim of offering opportunity to those who need it most. By focusing on marginalized populations they elevate sidelined voices, invoke important community dialogues, and support the creation and presenting of stories that are often overlooked. Knowing that by bringing these stories to the forefront they can create spaces that empower artists, invite the unusual, challenge norms, and forge new pathways that uplift individuals and communities both here and beyond.
