THE EXPERIENCE

During the pandemic, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone bought the iconic Denver-based restaurant Casa Bonita (made famous in part by a 2003 South Park episode). This documentary chronicles that journey. Director Arthur Bradford will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film.

ON SCREEN: ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!

2024. Directed by Arthur Bradford. Runtime: 88 minutes.

Casa Bonita Mi Amor! follows South Park and Book of Mormon co-creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, as they launch a hands-on attempt to revive the beloved and iconic Colorado “eatertainment” venue Casa Bonita. Opened in 1974 in a strip mall outside of Denver, the massive “Disneyland of Mexican restaurants” is an Old West and Acapulco-inspired fever dream made famous by its indoor waterfall, cliff divers, and haunted caves.

Parker and Stone grew up going to Casa Bonita and featured it in a classic 2003 episode of South Park. The restaurant fell upon hard times and closed its doors during the pandemic, causing many to wonder if it would ever re-open. To the delight and fascination of Colorado residents, Parker and Stone announced that they would take on the challenge of bringing Casa Bonita back to life. Local news outlets reported on their every move as problems mounted for the inexperienced duo. Parker, in particular, took on a Wonka-like obsession with bringing back the magical Casa Bonita of his youth. Two years and over $40 million later, Casa Bonita finally opened its doors to the public. Through intimate access with the film’s subjects, the filmmaking team behind the Emmy-nominated Six Days to Air chronicles this tale of mounting costs, rising expectations, and the power of childhood dreams.
