THE EXPERIENCE

Join local illustrator Jason Sturgill for a special limited screening of Boys Go to Jupiter — the brand new animated feature film that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024. Joining Jason is sound designer for the film Michael Todd Berland aka Richie Woods. Together they will host the screening and a post-screening discussion of the film.

ON SCREEN: Boys Go To Jupiter

2024. Directed by Juilan Glander. Runtime: 90 minutes. Not Rated.

Set in the liminal period between Christmas and New Year’s, the story follows the adventures of Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett), a teenage gig worker with a rise-and-grind mindset whose quest to make $5,000 is derailed by the appearance of a gelatinous little dude from outer space. Using the power of lo-fi musical numbers and deadpan comedy, Billy must save Donut and his family from the evil schemes of the Dolphin Groves Juice Company. The voice cast — which also includes Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman, Joe Pera, Cole Escola and Elsie Fisher — is a who’s who of weirdo comedy all-stars, adding to the charmingly strange vibe.––Frederic Boyer

ON STAGE: Michael Todd Berland aka Richie Woods

Michael Todd Berland aka Richie Woods is a Portland based music producer and sound designer. In the past decade he has written and recorded 6 solo albums under various aliases, 6 albums with the band Fox Academy, a game soundtrack and more recently begun sound design work and music composition for animation. His approach to music and audio production leans into the imperfections of home recording and embraces the neverending chase of interesting sounds. His music ranges in styles from dreamy indie rock to folk to lo-fi art pop and his sound design work combines original field recordings throughout the PNW as well as foley.

ON STAGE: Jason Sturgill

Jason Sturgill is a former graphic designer turned art director and illustrator. He grew up thinking he couldn’t draw and it wasn’t until he was in his 30s that he put the proverbial pencil to paper. Jason unknowingly has always been a fan of illustration from a young age through his fascination with skateboard and album art. This love of art led him to start an online art gallery in 2001 while he was working as an interactive producer at Wieden+Kennedy. His professional career started in advertising in a non creative capacity but after having cancer at the age of 28 he made a concerted effort to switch to design eventually working for Dark Horse Comics and Nike Skateboarding before pivoting into illustration. After working for several years as a professional illustrator Jason found out he had Bipolar 2 disorder and has integrated mental health advocacy in his personal work that he regularly shares through his instagram account. You can check out some of that work by following him at @jgspdx
