THE EXPERIENCE

Join us at the Tomorrow Theater for an evening celebrating Paul McCartney and The Beatles. Hosted by Portland’s very own Dave Depper (Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service), filmmaker/music video director Lance Bangs, and audio engineer/musician Skyler Pia, this program will feature a screening of A Hard Day’s Night and a lively panel conversation on the sonic and cultural impact of The Beatles for musicians/creatives in Portland today.

ON SCREEN: A Hard Day’s Night

1964. Directed by Richard Lester. Runtime: 88 minutes. Rated G.

For the generations that cannot quite fathom or understand the phenomena of Beatlemania and the images captured in Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm, A Hard Day’s Night offers context and confluence. In this musical comedy, The Beatles travel from Liverpool to London to perform various concerts. However, things take a dramatic turn as they realize that their drummer, Ringo, has gone missing. Given expansive access, writer Alun Owen and director Dick Lester bunked with the band in February of 1964 to observe Beatlemania (in Paris) first-hand just after their return from conquering America.

ON STAGE: Dave Depper, Lance Bangs, and Skyler Pia

Dave Depper

Dave Depper is a Portland-based musician and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the guitarist and keyboardist for indie rock bands Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. In April 2010, Depper spent 8-10 hours a day in his bedroom meticulously re-recording Paul and Linda McCartney’s much-loved album RAM, playing every instrument himself. He released the record to much critical praise earning him the moniker in local music circles, “The Paul McCartney of Portland.”

Lance Bangs

Lance Bangs is a Portland-based filmmaker, documentarian, and music video director who has created videos for Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Green Day, Arcade Fire, R.E.M., Mike Watt, Death Cab for Cutie, and Pavement, among many others. In 2021, Bangs wrote and directed the first-ever official music video for George Harrison’s song “My Sweet Lord,” celebrating the song’s 50th anniversary.

Skyler Pia

Skyler Pia is an audio engineer and musician based in Portland, Oregon. Since moving there in 2016, she’s played in as many bands as would have her. She works in a wide range of genres, and particularly enjoys the challenge of mixing and polishing home recordings. She specializes in mixing, mastering, and production, and is also available for session work and recording time at Studio C of Falcon Recording in Portland.
