Caryn Coleman, Founder of The Future of Film is Female and curator extraordinaire, kicks off this quarterly series advancing gender parity in the media industry by promoting and showcasing the kick-ass work of women filmmakers. The series will also feature themed cocktails and giveaways! Mosquito Lady (13 min.) will play prior to Perpetrator, followed by a Q&A with the director, Jennifer Reeder.

Jonny, a wild and impulsive teenage girl living in a town where young women continue to go missing, unleashes a power within she’s forced to unlock to survive. Featuring an incredible turn by Alicia Silverstone, it’s a rollercoaster ride from start to finish that is not to be missed!

 

Jennifer Reeder, Director
Jennifer Reeder constructs personal fiction films about relationships, trauma and coping. Her award-winning narratives are innovative and borrow from a range of forms including after school specials, amateur music videos and magical realism. These films have shown consistently around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival, The Berlin Film Festival, The Tribeca Film Festival, The Rotterdam Film Festival, The London Film Festival, SXSW, The Venice Biennale and The Whitney Biennial. Her awards include several that have qualified her films for Oscar nomination. She won a Creative Capital Grant in Moving Image in 2015, short film funding from Rooftop/Adrienne Shelly Foundation in 2016 and short film funding from the Hamburg Film Fund in 2016. She was a USA Artist nominee for 2008, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2020. She was a Herb Alpert Film Award nominee in 2018. She won a 2018/19 scriptwriting award from SFFIM/Rainin Foundation. She is the 2019 recipient of the Alpert Film Award residency at the MacDowell Colony, and was identified as one of Bong Joon Ho’s 20 Directors Who Are Pivotal to the Future of Cinema.

Mosquito Lady

2023. Written and directed by Kristine Gerolaga. With Hanna Lorica, Maria Lingbanan, Ina Dahilig, Rhandy Torres. Runtime: 13 minutes.

Terrified of telling her parents that she’s pregnant as restrictions to abortion access worsen, a sheltered and desperate Filipina American teenager seeks the help of a reclusive neighbor who her parents warned her about. This short film will screen before Perpetrator, and was supported by The Future of Film is Female.
