THE EXPERIENCE

Curated by Lisa Jarrett in conjunction with her Tenderhead exhibition at the Portland Art Museum. Prior to the screening, local hair culture education experts at HairSpiracy will host a talk and live hair demo.

ON SCREEN: Chez Jolie Coiffure

2019. Directed by Rosine Mbakam. Runtime: 1 hour 13 minutes.

Rosine Mbakam is invited to step in Sabine’s small hairdresser’s because it is dangerous in the street. She accepts and pushes in with her camera. Sabine’s stories and the customers’ joys, worries, problems and fears bring depth and life into the premises. At times, it feels like the entire African quarter of Brussels had squeezed in. Laughter abounds, anecdotes and life stories elicit emotions, and a male visitor brings a touch of flirt into the salon.

HOSTED BY: HairSpiracy

HairSpiracy, founded by Hanna Steigman, is a Portland-based organization that uses hair as a platform for education, cultural awareness, and community engagement. Rooted in both creative production and community-centered learning, Hanna’s work brings together storytelling, technical skill-building, and lived experience to create programming that is accessible, reflective, and impactful.

In collaboration with Angie Parker, a licensed hairstylist and educator, HairSpiracy bridges professional hair education with cultural context. Together, they design experiences that center textured hair not only as a practice, but as a connection to identity, history, and care.

Their work spans youth programs, teen experiences, and large-scale activations, each designed to give participants practical tools they can take home while also engaging in creative, mixed-media art projects that deepen understanding and self-expression. From foundational hair care to live demonstrations and storytelling, their approach blends education and artistry in a way that supports both individual confidence and community connection.

At PAM CUT’s Tomorrow Theater, their work comes together through film, art, and live demonstration—exploring the history of the salon, the cultural significance of hair, and the role these spaces play in shaping identity, creativity, and community across generations.
